Future research shows consumer tech confidence

UK consumers are becoming more confident in using technology, according to the annual Techmonitor research by Future, publisher of TechRadar.
Carried out with research specialist The Source, the findings from close to 2,900 UK responses show that 69% consider themselves experts in at least one area of technology, and that 58% are more confident using technology than they were a year ago.
The research also shows that the boundaries between home and work are blurring, in particular for 16-35 year-olds, and social networking is becoming more common, driven by the increased use of mobile devices.

US-headquartered Indian IT services major Cognizant has been ranked at 12th place on a Forbes list of America's 25 fastest growing tech companies, which has been topped by business networking site LinkedIn.

Social networking giant Facebook is ranked second, followed by global IT major Apple at the third place.

Nasdaq-listed Cognizant, which recently pipped Infosys as the second-largest IT services firm in India, is the only Indian company on the list. Despite being a US-based company, a significant portion of its employees are from India.

A 20-year-old Indian student from Cornell University hacked into the database of ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) school exam results, exposed glaring anomalies in the marking system and went on to merrily write about his exploits in an online post.

HTC's chief operating officer has stepped down in the middle of a management restructuring intended to improve product quality and supply chains, following delays in the launch of the Taiwanese firm's flagship new phone.

Matthew Costello became an executive advisor from Europe effective on June 1, according to an email from HTC president of engineering and operations Fred Liu to employees. Liu took up the operating responsibilities with Costello's departure.

Smartphone sales will eclipse those of basic mobile phones this year for the first time as desire for handheld computing power grows, a market tracker said on Tuesday.

International Data Corporation (IDC) expected smartphone shipments worldwide to reach 958.8 million units, topping last year's total by 32.7% to account for 52.2% of the mobile phone market.

A decade ago, the mere idea of cloud computing was a difficult concept to explain, let alone sell. Today, the technology is spurring a high-stakes scramble to buy some of the early leaders in the cloud-computing movement.

The latest examples of the trend emerged as two major technology companies announced acquisitions aimed at seeding their own clouds.

Cloud-computing pioneer Salesforce.com said it will spend about $2.5 billion to buy ExactTarget, a specialist in helping other companies manage marketing campaigns and other business functions through email, social networks and a variety of digital services that can be reached on any device with an Internet connection.

A month into his new role, BlackBerry India managing director Sunil Lalvani says his company will not ape competition strategies of price drops or liquidating old stock, but will bet on offering value to drive its sales. The Canadian smartphone maker also has no intention to get into the $100 (approx Rs 5,600) device market in India, he told ET in an interview.

Official says data show US cyberattacks on China

China's Internet security chief has told state media that Beijing has amassed large amounts of data about US-based hacking attacks against China but refrains from blaming the White House or thePentagon because it would be irresponsible.

The state-run English-language China Daily reported Wednesday that Huang Chengqing, director of the government's Internet emergency response agency, said Beijing and Washington should cooperate rather than confront each other in the fight against cyberattacks. Huang also calls for mutual trust.

EBay to open shoppable windows in New York

EBay Inc is launching virtual stores called "shoppable windows" this month that the e-commerce company hopes will help retailers generate more sales from their existing physical store networks.

The first four of these screens will open from June 8 through July 7 in busy parts of New York City, such as the lower east side and Soho. They will sell 30 items from Kate Spade Saturday, a new fashion brand launched this year by apparel retailer Fifth & Pacific Companies Inc.

EBay set up a window display in New York City in late 2011, but those storefronts did not let shoppers order products on the screen.

Online gaming company Zynga is laying off at least 30 of its over 400 employees in India as part of a global restructuring. Globally, Zynga , creator of the once wildly popular FarmVille and City-Ville games, is laying off 520 employees, about 18% of its 3,000-strong workforce.

Zynga had not responded to a mail sent by TOI at the time of going to print, but company founder Mark Pincus's letter to employees said the layoff impact would be felt across every group in the company. The word in Zynga India is that at least 6% of the employees here would be impacted. Zynga's Bangalore centre, started in 2010, has rapidly expanded to become the company's second largest operation in the world, after its San Francisco centre. It started as a centre doing core R&D for the company. A year later started a studio that now manages multiple games, developing new content and creating new features for them.

Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest software services exporter, said it has raised the chief executive N Chandrasekaran's maximum salary limit by 50% to Rs 15 lakh a month with effect from April 1, 2014, to "compensate for the additional business activities and responsibilities."

Including benefits and bonuses, TCS CEO was paid around Rs 12 crore in the year to 31 March 2013. The salary bump comes at a time when TCS is easily outpacing its competition in the Indian IT outsourcing industry. Revenue in 2012-13 grew 14%, ahead of the industry growth rate of about 11%.

International Business Machines (IBM) said on Tuesday it would acquire web hosting company SoftLayer Technologies and create a new division for clients interested in so-called cloud services, a move to better compete with larger rivals in the space.

Executives with IBM and SoftLayer declined to comment on the terms of the deal on a call with reporters.

Reuters reported in March that IBM, among others, had been in talks to buy SoftLayer in a deal that could fetch more than $2 billion.

Windows Phone gains amid Apple Android clash

Windows-powered smartphones made strong gains in the US market in early 2013, capturing third place, with Android and Apple at the top, a survey showed.

Android, the free operating system from Google, remained the top platform with 51.7 per cent of US sales in the three months to April, up from 50.3 per cent a year earlier, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Apple's iOS was second with 41.4 per cent, up from 39.1 per cent a year earlier, the survey found.

Tata Consultancy Services, the country's largest software company, may sack as many as 290 employees at its Finland office, a move that the workers say is an attempt to shift jobs to India.

TCS, which has a registered office in Helsinki and has an employee strength of about 800 in Finland, is currently in negotiations with the employee representatives (ERs) over the move to cut jobs.

The Union of Professional Engineers in Finland (UIL) claimed that the jobs at stake were about 412, a figure which TCS said was inaccurate.

Online gaming company Zynga's decision to lay off 520 employees may impact its Indian headcount as well. According to reports, around 400 employees were working for Zynga in India as of April 2013. "We are not commenting about specific offices - the impact will be felt across every group in the company," said a company statement in response to an e-mail query by ET.

The US-based gaming company started its India operations in 2012 and has an office in Bangalore. According to media reports, during his maiden visit to India in April, CEO and founder Mark Pincus had said that after San Francisco, India was their biggest centre and has been a 'terrific investment' for the company.

Dell trimmed CEO Michael Dell's pay by 14 per cent to $13.9 million last year amid a slump that culminated in a proposed $24.4 billion deal that could end the personal computer maker's 25-year history as a publicly traded company.

Most of Michael Dell's compensation last year consisted of stock awards designed to give him a greater incentive to boost the Round Rock, Texas, company's market value.

Michael Dell's stock awards were valued at $11.6 million last year while his salary remained unchanged at $950,000, according to a company filing with securities regulators Monday. He also received perks and other benefits worth $19,122.

3 ways how cybercheats defraud you

As the popularity of online transactions is on the rise, so are the attempts by unscrupulous entities to defraud you and make good with your money. Here are some common ways of defrauding the online citizenry and some must-have precautions when you are transacting online.

Phishing
Most financial (banking, credit/debit card) hack attacks start with 'phishing' - a term given to an online scam where fraudsters steal a victim's personal information by sending out emails that appear to have originated from legitimate financial institutions, mostly banks. These emails usually state that the user needs to urgently update or validate his/her account information after clicking on a link in the email. The link, however, leads the victim to a fraudulent website.

NIIT to offer courses through cloud campus

In one of its most significant shift in business model, computer education major NIIT will offer courses directly on student's tablets and desktops, via what it calls a cloud campus. Besides, in the next three years, it sees non-IT courses like banking, design and social media marketing account for about one-third of its revenues.

This branching out into an alternative medium, as well as diversification drive, is about both a pull and push. "We are using the slowdown opportunity to shift to cloud," says Rajendra S Pawar, chairman of NIIT. "It will redefine how education is delivered." NIIT will offer about 50 courses via the cloud. Among the new ones are social media marketing, which will train students on how to use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and blogs for marketing. There's also digital media marketing, online marketing, business & financial services for commerce graduates to make them job-ready for sectors like banking and insurance.

India has the fastest internet traffic growth globally and is expected to have 348 million users by 2017, a study by networking giant Cisco said.

According to Cisco's Visuals Networking Index (VNI) forecast (2012-17), internet traffic in India will reach 2.5 exabytes per month in 2017, up from 393 petabytes per month in 2012. One exabyte equals 1 million terabytes.

"In India, there will be 348 million internet usersin 2017, up from 138 million in 2012," the VNI forecast said.

Leaked images of cheaper iPhone appear online

As Apple's annual WWDC developer conference draws near, the buzz about the company launching new devices is getting stronger. Grapevine is rife that Apple may unveil two iPhones at the conference, one of which will be the cheaper version of the device. Now, a website has published what it claims is the leaked image of the long-rumoured handset.

Two users of Chinese microblogging website Weibo have posted images that are said to be of the alleged cheaper iPhone. Consistent with previous reports, the device has a curved body and is made using glossy plastic. The Weibo users who leaked the images say that the device has a curved back and feels good in the hand.

Hon Hai Precision Industry aims to extend its business to provide devices and applications that build on Mozilla's Firefox operating system in a bid to diversify away from the company's core contract manufacturing business that yields low margins.

The world's largest contract electronics manufacturer said it will launch a series of products running Firefox, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, electronic whiteboards and outdoor displays. The company said there are currently more than five devices in development.

Invisalign, a San Jose company, uses 3D printing to make each mouthful of customized, transparent braces. Mackenzies Chocolates, a confectioner in Santa Cruz, uses a 3D printer to pump out chocolate molds. And earlier this year, Cornell University researchers used a 3D printer, along with injections of a special collagen gel, to create a human-shaped ear.

Once a science-fiction fantasy, three-dimensional printers are popping up everywhere from the desks of home hobbyists to Air Force drone research centers. The machines, generally the size of a microwave oven and costing $400 to more than $500,000, extrude layer upon layer of plastics or other materials, including metal, to create 3D objects with moving parts.

Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCom) plans to shift more than 5,500 employees from its call centre functions for post paid, enterprise, international calling and Reliance India back offices to third-party business process outsourcing companies.

RCom chief executive officer Gurdeep Singh confirmed the move. Two persons aware of the development said deals with existing and new BPO companies were almost finalised and contracts will be announced in the next three to four weeks.

Acer expects up to 80% of its products to use touchscreen technology by next year or the year after, hoping new tablets and touch-notebook computers will revive its sales in a PC market where quarterly shipments are at their lowest in nearly four years.

Touchscreen models are expected to rise to 30-35% of total notebook PC sales at the world's No. 4 PC vendor by the end of this year, up from 25% this quarter, Acer Chairman JT Wang told Reuters in an interview. The company shipped 1.2 million tablets in the January-March quarter and has a target of 5 million to 10 million for the whole year.

Google put out word that it won't add face-recognition features to Glass, in a bow to privacy fears raised about the camera-enabled internet-connected eyewear.

"We won't add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place," Google said in an online message aimed at software developers creating applications for Glass.

"With that in mind, we won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time," the message continued, revealing how the company intends to refer to software designed for the devices.

Samsung Electronics Co said it will use Intel processors to power a new version of one of its top-tier Android tablets.

Its decision to begin using Intel in a marquee Android device is a coup for the US chipmaker as it races to establish itself in a mobile market it was slow initially to recognize and invest in. Samsung's announcement confirms an earlier Reuters story and media reports on May 30.

Samsung has previously used chips designed with energy-efficient technology from the UK's ARM Holdings for its best-selling mobile devices.

Global security software market revenues rose 8 per cent to $ 19.2 billion last year, spurred by practices like bring your own device ( BYOD), among other issues, global research firm Gartner said on Thursday.

Worldwide revenues from security software market totalled $ 17.7 billion in 2011, the firm added.

"The evolution of new threats and working practices, such as bring your own device (BYOD), is driving spending on security," it said.

InfosysBSE 6.87 % rallied over 8 per cent in morning trade on Monday to hit its psychological level of Rs 2600, after the country's second largest software services major Infosys on Saturday re-appointed NR Narayana Murthy as its executive chairman with immediate effect to put the company back on high growth path.

As the next Samsung press event approaches, device names have been appearing here and there both with and without specifications attached. In this case it’s the inevitable Samsung Galaxy Note III, complete with its code-name SM-N9000 riding in the source code of Samsung Kazakhstan, of all places, along with some other rumored devices. Here we also see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, 8.0, and 7.0, along with the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom - a replacement for the Samsung Galaxy Camera.
The Samsung Galaxy line of smartphone-sized devices has been an apparent success for the brand, bringing on a second round last year (two years ago the original Galaxy Note was introduced), along with two sizes of Galaxy Note tablets. As the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 appeared with styling not unlike that of the GALAXY S 4, Samsung all but guaranteed the release of another new Galaxy Note “phablet”.

Starting tomorrow, Apple will be part of a trial in which federal and state authorities have suggested the latter company was part of ebook price-fixing. This trial will work with allegations that Apple has conspired with publishers to artificially raise the price of ebooks for sale in the iTunes Store for devices like the iPad and the iPhone. This trial was originally set to include five of the six largest book publishers in the US and was originally filed in April of 2012.

Both market analysts and IT industry honchos have welcomed software giant Infosys' move to appoint NR Narayana Murthy as the executive chairman of the board with effect from June 1, 2013.
